Time for a break?

When was the last time you took a holiday? Already we are nearly halfway through the year. Christmas and New Year is but a fading image in the rearview mirror, and the end of this year still feels like a lifetime away. Even for those with children, school holidays are not always the most relaxing time to take a break from work and unwind.

Our research into mental health and wellbeing found that nearly half of all dental practitioners hadn’t taken a holiday in the previous 12 months, and for nearly 20% their last holiday was more than 2 years ago.

There are important and immediate benefits of taking time off work in terms of reducing stress. Although this is often only transient, with stress levels on the rise, this points to the need for regular breaks throughout the year. But taking a week or two off work can be enough to recharge your batteries and experience a boost of positive emotions.

There are also reported benefits for employers when staff take leave, including increased productivity and reduced sick leave.

As we approach winter, it’s important to look at scheduling a break – whether it’s off to the snow to maximise winter, heading north or overseas to escape the cold or just staying at home to read a book and explore your home town.

Holidays don’t need to be expensive. You don’t even need to travel. The key is to switch off from work and take the time to relax.
